Bottom Fishing Off Orange Beach: Reefs, Rigs, and What's Biting

The Gulf floor off Orange Beach is full of natural reef, artificial structure, and rigs that hold fish year-round. Here is how to fish it right.

By Orange Beach Marina·September 27, 2026

The Gulf floor off Orange Beach is not flat sand. It is a mix of natural reef, limestone ledges, and hundreds of artificial reefs and oil and gas platforms that hold fish year-round. For a captain who wants bent rods without a long run offshore, bottom fishing is the reliable play.

Where the Fish Live

Natural and artificial reefs sit in state and federal waters close to the pass. State inshore reefs lie within nine nautical miles of shore, placed specifically to give smaller boats a target. Federal reefs and the rigs sit farther out, in deeper water, and hold bigger fish.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources publishes coordinates for public reefs and the Orange Beach reef zones. Load those numbers into your plotter before you leave the dock. Fishing a known structure beats hunting empty bottom.

The Standard Rig

Bottom fishing is simple gear fished correctly. A two-hook dropper rig with a heavy sinker gets bait to the bottom and keeps it there. Circle hooks reduce gut-hooking and release cleanly. Fifty to eighty-pound braid or mono main line with a fluorocarbon leader handles the abrasion of reef and structure.

Fresh bait outperforms frozen. Live pinfish, cigar minnows, and squid all catch, and cut bait works when the fish are feeding hard. Match hook size to bait and target. A small hook for snapper, a larger one for grouper.

Reading the Depth and the Drift

Anchor uptide of the structure and let your baits settle back to it. If you cannot anchor, drift and control your descent, keeping the boat uptide. Watch your electronics for the fish marks, and when the bottom goes from flat to hard and lumpy, you are on structure.

Reef fish bite best when current is modest. A strong tide makes it hard to hold bottom. Work the slack and the slower parts of the tide for the cleanest presentation.

What Is Biting, and When

Red snapper is the headliner, with a tightly managed season that changes every year. Beyond snapper, expect vermilion snapper, triggerfish, amberjack, grouper, and king mackerel on the higher parts of the structure. Inshore reefs hold sheepshead, flounder, and sea trout.

Check the current regulations every trip. Seasons, bag limits, and size limits change, and the rules in state and federal waters differ. Release undersized fish carefully and keep only what you will eat.

Doing It Right

Bottom fishing off Orange Beach rewards preparation over horsepower. A short run to a good reef, fresh bait, a clean rig, and a careful eye on the electronics will put you on fish more often than covering twenty miles of empty water. Keep the structure marked and the boat uptide, and the Gulf will produce.
